Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has finally opened up on the reasons behind his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as one motivated by “vision, unity, and a renewed commitment to national development.”
Mbah, who made the remarks while addressing journalists in Enugu on Monday, said his decision was guided by a strong belief in working with like-minded leaders to drive sustainable growth for the people of Enugu and Nigeria as a whole.
A Move Driven by National Interest
Speaking at the press briefing, Governor Mbah explained that joining the APC was not a decision made out of personal ambition but one rooted in the quest for progress and better collaboration with the Federal Government.
“My decision to join the APC is about aligning with a vision that prioritizes development, inclusivity, and stability. I believe it’s time to work closely with the centre to attract greater investment and infrastructure to Enugu State,” he said.
The governor noted that political affiliations should never stand in the way of governance or the delivery of dividends of democracy to the people.
Strengthening Ties with the Federal Government
Governor Mbah emphasized that his administration remains committed to its development agenda and that joining the APC would open new opportunities for partnerships in areas such as security, infrastructure, and youth empowerment.
“The truth is that governance works best when there is synergy between the state and the Federal Government. Our focus is to ensure that Enugu continues to grow, and the people benefit from every available opportunity,” he added.
According to political observers, Mbah’s defection may further strengthen the APC’s influence in the South-East region, which has traditionally been a stronghold of the PDP.
Mixed Reactions Trail the Defection
Mbah’s move has sparked mixed reactions across the political landscape. While his supporters have hailed the decision as “strategic and visionary,” some PDP loyalists expressed disappointment, describing it as a “betrayal of trust.”
Political analysts, however, argue that the defection reflects a broader trend among Nigerian politicians seeking stronger alignment with the ruling party to enhance developmental cooperation.
Mbah’s Promise to the People
Reassuring his constituents, Governor Mbah stated that his loyalty remains to the people of Enugu, not to any political structure. He promised to continue delivering on his campaign promises, including job creation, improved education, and infrastructural renewal.
“Party platforms may change, but my commitment to serve Enugu remains the same. What matters most is delivering results,” he said.
