“Presidency Clarifies: Finance Minister Wale Edun Recuperating at Home, No Plans for Replacement – Tinubu Govt”
“Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy.”
The Presidency has dismissed reports suggesting that Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, has been flown abroad for medical treatment, confirming instead that the minister is recuperating at his residence in Abuja.
In an official clarification issued on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said Edun is “indisposed but responding well to treatment” and remains within the country.
Presidency: ‘No Replacement Planned’
Onanuga described as false and misleading the media reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was seeking a replacement for the minister following alleged health complications.
“The Honourable Minister is resting and recovering at home. There is no truth in the claim that he has been flown abroad or that the President is looking for a replacement,” Onanuga stated.
The presidential aide urged the public to disregard speculative reports, emphasizing that government business continues smoothly despite the minister’s brief absence from public appearances.

Delegation Adjustments for IMF/World Bank Meetings
Meanwhile, the Presidency confirmed that Central Bank Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, will lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings in Washington, D.C.
According to the statement, this is a temporary arrangement made to ensure Nigeria’s continued representation in key international financial discussions while the finance minister recuperates.
“It is normal practice for the CBN Governor to represent the country when the Finance Minister is unavailable. The economic team remains united and focused,” Onanuga added.
Public Reaction and Ongoing Concerns
The clarification comes after widespread rumors circulated across social media and some news platforms that Edun had suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for intensive medical care — reports the Presidency has firmly denied.
Political observers note that Edun, a close ally of President Tinubu and a key figure in the administration’s economic reform agenda, has been under immense pressure as the country grapples with currency volatility, fuel price instability, and rising living costs.

What This Means for Nigeria’s Economic Policy
Analysts say the Presidency’s reassurance is aimed at calming public concern and preventing any potential market panic over Nigeria’s fiscal leadership.
With the 2026 budget proposal expected soon, Edun’s recovery and return to active duty remain critical to maintaining confidence in the administration’s economic roadmap.
The Presidency’s clarification appears designed to douse tension and maintain confidence in Nigeria’s fiscal leadership amid ongoing economic reforms. For now, all indications show that Wale Edun remains in recovery at home, with no immediate cabinet changes expected.
